Memphis, Tennessee, June 29, 2017 – Andrew Goldstein, an 8th Grade English Teacher at KIPP Memphis Academy Middle in Memphis, Tennessee, couldn’t have been caught more off guard by the recent super-storm which wreaked havoc in his hometown. In fact, it was one of the biggest storms of its kind over the last two decades; one similarly memorable natural catastrophe for occupants of local properties is the 1994 Ice Storm which caused significant damage to residences in its vicinity. Likewise, in 2003, Hurricane Elvis stranded a similar number of civilians. News outlets in the area also reported possible tornadoes in the fast-moving storm, while damaging winds, destructive hail, and flooding downpours posed a similarly significant...

Trump gets it from all sides for trash-talking MSNBC hosts

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump launched a crude Twitter attack on the brains, looks and temperament of a female TV personality Thursday, drawing bipartisan howls of outrage and leaving fellow Republicans beseeching him: Stop, please just stop. Trump’s tweets aimed at MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski revived concerns about his views of women in a city where civility already is in short supply and he is struggling for any support he can get for his proposals on health care, immigration and other controversial issues. “I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don’t watch anymore),” Trump tweeted to his nearly 33 million followers Thursday morning. “Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in...

Oil pipeline firms’ discounts rile clients, roil markets
Oil pipeline firms’ discounts rile clients, roil markets

2017-06-28

By Catherine Ngai | NEW YORK U.S. pipeline operators are selling their underused space at steep discounts to keep crude flowing – angering shippers and distorting an already opaque market for oil trading. Pipeline firms such as Plains All American (PAA.N) and TransCanada Corp (TRP.TO) move about 10 million barrels of crude around the United States every day. For pipeline operators to secure financing to build pipelines and storage facilities, they need oil producers, refiners and traders to sign long-term contracts to use space on the pipelines. Pipeline firms can then use the guaranteed revenue from those contracts as collateral. Firms shipping on the pipeline have historically benefited from the long-term deals because they offered a discount compared to the price of buying space occasionally. But now, in the wake of a two-year oil price crash, pipeline firms...

America’s hungriest wind and solar power users: big companies

2017-06-21

By Nichola Groom | LOS ANGELES Major U.S. corporations such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) and General Motors Co (GM.N) have become some of America’s biggest buyers of renewable energy, driving growth in an industry seen as key to helping the United States cut carbon emissions. Last year nearly 40 percent of U.S. wind contracts were signed by corporate power users, along with university and military customers. That’s up from just 5 percent in 2013, according to the American Wind Energy Association trade group. These users also accounted for an unprecedented 10% of the market for large-scale solar projects in 2016, figures from research firm GTM Research show. Just two years earlier there were none. The big reason: lower energy bills. GRAPHIC – Big companies are powering the U.S. clean energy push: tmsnrt.rs/2tr9Q1Z...
